Site and forum repairs

Post by cmloegcmluin »

Hello fellow Sagittans,

Some of you may have noticed that the HTTPS version of the main site and forum was down for a little over a month. We (the admins) are very sorry about that, but glad to report that it's been back for about a week now, and that hopefully it will never go down again.

Here's what happened: Google made a change to their policy regarding email server authentication, which beginning late last year, silently took out our ability to receive important warnings from the forum's server — warnings such as the ones it started trying to send us last month about our SSL certificate failing to renew!

Perhaps even worse, Google's change broke the forum's ability to send notifications to its users. So if you've noticed your Sagittal forum email folder has been looking a little empty this year, that's the sad reason why. Please take a minute to check up on your favorite subforums and topics in case you may have missed something.

One last minor note: in the days immediately after fixing the HTTPS problem by getting a new SSL certificate, there was a weird effect to the forum where users were being required to log back in more often than they should. If you experienced that issue, we apologize, but we've identified the cause for that and fixed it as well.

Thanks again for bearing with us admins as we try to keep up with changing web technology and policy. It's way less fun than microtonal music, that's for sure. For what it's worth, we're definitely moving in a direction where more of these problems are managed for us, which should help prevent any future lapses in access.

(By the way, "Sagittans" is not an established thing... I just felt like maybe we could use a term for "users of Sagittal", and so I made that one up on the spot.)
