How can I convert from Sagittal to BravuraMSS

Post by PrentRodgers »

I use excel spreadsheets to describe tuning systems, and I used to be able to specify Sagittal as the font, and then had a way to display Sagittal characters just by changing the font for a cell. I can't find the old Sagittal font online anywhere, so I installed the BravuraMSS font, but the mapping from characters to glyphs is different. Is there an index from the Sagittal character to the BravuraMSS character I could use to keep using Microsoft Excel?

Hi Prent. Welcome to the Sagittal forum.

I note that the BravuraMSS font is based on a superceded version of Bravura, so you should not use BravuraMSS unless you are using the Evo (mixed) flavour of Sagittal and
you don't need any symbols outside the Spartan set and
you need the combinations of the Spartans with conventional sharps and flats to be combined into a single character instead of being two characters.

Otherwise you should just use the standard Bravura font, installers for which can be found here:
viewtopic.php?p=4516#p4516

And here is the character map for the Sagittal symbols in Bravura:

https://sagittal.org/Sagittal-SMuFL-Map.xlsx
https://sagittal.org/Sagittal-SMuFL-Map.ods

There is currently no index mapping from the old Sagittal codepoints to the new Bravura codepoints. But I have put the following old files back onto the Sagittal web server for you. They are not linked from anywhere but this post. When cross-referenced with the Bravura map above, using the pure long ASCII representation, they allow you to create such an index.

But if you tell me whether your existing symbols use the version 1 or version 2 mapping, and tell me what spreadsheet format you would like it in, and whether you want the codepoints in decimal or hex, I can create such an index for you. [Edit: Done, below]

The character map for the version 1 Sagittal fonts:

The character map for the version 2 Sagittal fonts:
https://sagittal.org/Sagittal2_character_map.xls
https://sagittal.org/Sagittal2_character_map.ods

The last version 2 Sagittal font:

OK. I made a spreadsheet giving the SMuFL/Bravura codepoint in decimal and hex, for every Sagittal2 codepoint in decimal and hex, along with the long ASCII and the graphical description.

https://sagittal.org/MapFromSagitta2ToSMuFL.xlsx
https://sagittal.org/MapFromSagitta2ToSMuFL.ods

It wasn't as simple as I thought. In the Sagittal 2 Map there were several errors in the long ASCII representations, and some of the graphical descriptions were abbreviated, so it took a combination of both, plus some manual intervention, to get it right.

Wonderful. I'm back in business. I switched from Windows to Linux a few years ago, and just now wanted to go back to working Sagittal for a representation of the tonality diamond to the 31-limit. I quickly realized that it made no sense without the Sagittal font. My spreadsheets no longer showed the right accidentals They do now. Thank you for such a thorough explanation. I installed the old Sagittal font and my spreadsheets worked again.

That's good to hear. Will you be converting to Bravura?

Please send us a link to, or a copy of, your Sagittally-notated 31-limit diamond when it is ready.

Also, we have a link from your name on the Sagittal website home page that is now broken. Can you suggest a replacement. It is:
