George's grid

Post by Dave Keenan »

While engaged in some Sagittal archaeology for another purpose, I found this spreadsheet. It's a 5-limit JI grid, notated in Herculean Sagittal (ASCII mixed), with coloured cells showing the closely-approximated higher primes having the same notation.

The highlighted cells don't just signify single primes; many of them represent one prime against another or something similar. One of them, assuming it's meant to be the primary comma for its symbol, is actually slightly farther away from its position in the grid than the n/s boundary (!), and the remainder produce a wide variety of schisminas that, for lack of a better thing (that consists of less than 700 elements) to catalogue, I felt like figuring out.

[-5 -8 8>184/9923:58·11s1.82¢

The spreadsheet is so extensive I'm fairly sure I missed something even after that, and yes, there were duplicates (only one of each is actually shown) and certain adjacent cells colored (closely-related notes are only listed once).

* 729/544 is listed as both :(||(:E and :~|:F. Perhaps this was meant to be a secondary comma?
† This lists :'::/|||):A, :(!(:B, :~!!!(:C, and :!!!~:C. None of these are particularly simple and two of them are about on par with each other, so it's a mystery which one was meant.

I'm in college (a CS major), but apparently there's still a decent amount of time to check this out. I wonder if the main page will ever have 59edo changed to green...

Thanks for that. Would you please align the cent errors in their own column, and show which of George's colours each row of the table corresponds to. And maybe give the 2,3,5-commas as prime count vectors [. . .⟩.

Done. It's... interesting, as he variously used text color, bold text, both, and a background color.

Some notes are also notated with, uh, unconventional choices like |)) for :(/|: (...understandable), :.:~)| as an alternative to :)|(: (???), and :.::|~: as an alternative to :~|(:.
