Re: Prime-factor Sagittal JI notation (one symbol per prime)

Yes. Absolutely correct. Thanks for that. Making a font containing every combination of sharps and flats (and their doubles) with every combination of prime Sagittals that anyone is likely to want, is a very daunting prospect. It's hard to understand why the developers of the various notation progra...

Re: 39-odd limit diamond in Olympian

I finally posted the one-symbol-per-prime notation:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=99&p=263#p263
In that notation, you can see that all primes up to 37 have exact symbols without any accent marks.

Prime-factor Sagittal JI notation (one symbol per prime)

[MODERATOR NOTE: This topic was previously called "Multi-Sagittal JI notation (one symbol per prime)".] Juhani Nuorvala has made me realise that George and I had been far too dismissive of one-symbol-per-prime notations for JI. We made it clear in the Xenharmonikôn article, that such a not...

Re: 39-odd limit diamond in Olympian

It's going to take me a little while to digest all your comments. Thank you for such detailed replies. What I meant by Sagittal notation "tempering out" certain commas is ... ... the notation generally uses combinations of simple lower prime symbols to represent higher prime identities, m...

Re: 39-odd limit diamond in Olympian

We can see here that, once we get beyond the ratios notated exactly by the Spartan set, the usage falls off faster than Zipf's law . The Zip's Law predictions are the red bars, the actual frequencies are the blue. http://forum.sagittal.org/download/file.php?mode=view&id=17 Popularity of commas Z...

Re: 39-odd limit diamond in Olympian

Here's the first part of those Scala archive statistics I mentioned—up to the first occurrence of prime 37. Powers of 2 and 3 have been removed from the ratios because these are taken care of by octaves and nominals-plus-sharps-and-flats. So each line (other than the first) shows something we need a...

Re: 39-odd limit diamond in Olympian

Actually, it would be good to include single-Sagittal notations for all ratios in the 13-smooth 45 odd limit that can be notated exactly using a Spartan symbol and up to two right accents (schismina accents). And the note would say that these accents can be dropped from the performance notation if e...

Re: 39-odd limit diamond in Olympian

Wow! Well done Cam! However I fear that many will find the number of different symbols used, including diacritics, to be overwhelming. The fact is that ratios in JI compositions obey something like Zipf's law where the second most common ratio is used only about half as often as the most common, and...

Re: 13-limit JI

I just emailed Daniel Spreadbury of Steinberg to encourage them to implement multiple accidental glyphs per note, and am pleased to post the following reply. Hi Dave, Thanks for your email. As part of a tuning system in our application you will be able to define the number of EDOs, and then specify ...
