Re: proportional/spatial + symbolic notation

As far as I understand it, I think your proposal to use vertical pitch height more rationally (logarithmically) does make sense. … But why not just correct the irregularity? … Let me describe the end result, in case it's not already clear in your mind (sorry, I've nabbed images for all the things I'...

Re: an approach for non-octave tunings

As I've suggested elsewhere recently, perhaps another set of nominals would suit this case better. Then every tritave would start on the same tritave, and all tritaves of any note would share the same nominal. For a scale with 9 notes per tritave, you might use, say, the nominals P, Q, R, S, T, U, V...

Re: proportional/spatial + symbolic notation

To start near the end of your post: Another excellent quality of the piano-roll notation (which I think of as a "player piano", or pianola, notation, having when a child delighted in my grandparent's instrument of that type) is this: that it shows both the start and the end of each note. A...

Re: Yer: a Sagittal study

Cents deviations might be useful for dumb machine instructions. But for musically aware performers, are they like training wheels on a bike? Somebody who learns to ride with training wheels may never nerve themselves to take them off. Perhaps they're also like blinkers on a horse? A horse's blinkers...

Re: harmonic vs. melodic notation

… 23-EDO … according to Wikipedia , … If you look on its Wikipedia page, it proposes an interesting dichotomy: between a "harmonic notation" and a "melodic notation". The latter is dumber, treating sharps and flats more as instructions to move up or down by one scale step, respe...

Re: "Sagispeak"

Just downloaded the new Excel spreadsheet and the Bravura Text SC font, and find that the troublesome accidentals now display correctly on Windows 7 . Interestingly, in the Excel formula bar, every one of the Bravura Text SC characters still displays as Chinese! Why they do, I don't know - yet .

Re: "Sagispeak"

Thanks again, Dave! - for all the hard work, and your speedy response. It's always my pleasure to help, whenever I can, to test or debug any application or system so that it delivers a more satisfying user experience. So I'll certainly download " the new, improved version " as soon as prac...

Re: "Sagispeak"

Just installed the latest LibreOffice 7.0.4.2 (x64) (with locale :en-AU; UI : en-GB) on my Windows 8.1 laptop, then loaded the .ods spreadsheet. Unfortunately the Olympian (U+E3F4 - U+E3F7) and Magrathean (U+E3F8 - U+E40B) symbols still appear as (mostly) Chinese characters, with a few communication...

Re: "Sagispeak"

Thanks Dave, and Douglas. : D I've downloaded and installed the Bravura fonts and downloaded the spreadsheets, in both formats. As I only have an old version of MS Office (2003) on this old Win7 desktop, I also have the compatibility pack, which automatically converts Excel 2007 format (.xlsx) to Ex...
