Re: general methods for linear temperament notation
I notice that he not only uses the same notation |a b c ...> for prime exponents and generator counts, he doesn't use plus signs and he even calls the latter "tempered monzos" — yikes — helping making my case that Gene's monzo/val terminology is unhelpful and just raises a barrier to entr...

Re: Simplified "Stoic" Sagittal for 13-limit tonality diamond use
I meant to say that I love your latest 8 ppss bitmaps, except I would make the 12 dent symbol wider, and more symmetrical about its staff position as follows: https://forum.sagittal.org/download/file.php?mode=view&id=359 I also meant to tell you that I've been fixing up your attempts to display ...

Re: Simplified "Stoic" Sagittal for 13-limit tonality diamond use
Hi Nick, I think you should post the bitmaps (with explanation) to the end of your existing MM&TT thread for comment. Make it clear that while there is a hint of a curve in the right flags for the font, everything can still be just straight lines when handwritten. If no-one finds any problems, t...

Re: Simplified "Stoic" Sagittal for 13-limit tonality diamond use
Regarding Fontforge, I am very eager to explore a little, and I have downloaded it... however, I couldn't get it to read the .ttf Sagittal file you sent, even after downloading it to my fonts! Any idea what might be wrong? You don't need to install the font in your system to be able to open it with...

Re: Simplified "Stoic" Sagittal for 13-limit tonality diamond use
Those are great, Nicholas! Your 6 ppss bitmaps prove that 3 dent and 1 dent can be made sufficiently distinct on a staff space, but they violate a kind of rule (based on my own observation), that I should have spelled out earlier. It's about two black pixels that meet diagonally (only at a corner), ...

Re: Simplified "Stoic" Sagittal for 13-limit tonality diamond use
Dave, these are brilliant! So readable, and neat-looking; I am definitely happy with this as a base design. I am seeing quite clearly what you said before about the limitations of my initial design. Thanks. But I worry that, when they are on a space, the 3-dent symbol is not very different from the...

Re: Simplified "Stoic" Sagittal for 13-limit tonality diamond use
Yes, it's quite a punishing discipline, forcing yourself to make them distinct on a 6-ppss black & white bitmap. It's a way of simulating poor reading conditions. Here's my attempt: https://forum.sagittal.org/download/file.php?mode=view&id=354 The scrolls aren't really scrolls any more. They...

Re: Simplified "Stoic" Sagittal for 13-limit tonality diamond use
Hi Nicholas. That's definitely an improvement. But I think we can do better. I'm in the middle of repainting my kitchen ceiling today, or I would have tried my hand at the bitmaps. :) Some areas are a bit too busy when combined with the staff lines. I think the double and triple scrolls need to be s...

Re: Yer: a Sagittal study
I think it's whenever the closest 12edo pitch differs from the one notated, when you ignore all but the conventional accidentals. That's certainly an option. But it seems a little silly to do that for D#-49 when you could just write 51. I'd probaby let the offset go to 59 or 60 before doing that. An...

Re: Simplified "Stoic" Sagittal for 13-limit tonality diamond use
Here's an earlier attempt, from August 2003. You can see a version of your 5 dent symbol, in a column just to the left of centre. And some horrible round-shouldered arcs. We were limiting ourselves to a maximum of 2 flags per symbol at this stage. Later relaxed to 3. https://forum.sagittal.org/downl...
