Re: 5n edos

I'm not familiar with how you select characters as accidentals in MUS2. Can you type in a unicode specification like "U+E394"? Can you scroll a palette of characters way way down, until you get to the "E-thousands" and start to see musical symbols? Dave, could you consider purch...

Re: 13-limit JI

Just a detail I noticed in one of the earlier posts; not important but I'll correct it anyway. http://www.marcsabat.com/pdfs/EJItext.pdf However, he appears to be in error when he writes, "In Johnston’s notation, septimal intervals above a note are indicated by adding a small 7 accidental. An i...

Re: 13-limit JI

The EDO playback we could live with, since one can always find an EDO that is close enough for any given piece (except perhaps some Lamonte Young). The question is only how finely divided it needs to be. But the lack of cumulative accidentals is just silly. Well, sure, but it may be more complicate...

Re: 13-limit JI

I was in contact with Steinberg. They will not implement cumulative accidentals. And the microtonal playback will only work for EDOs.

Re: 13-limit JI

Is there any notation software available now that allows multiple accidental characters against a single note? In Finale you can freely add symbols on the stave to create a single compound symbol; however, you can't get correct microtonal playback that way as you can only designate a single pitch b...

Re: 13-limit JI

"both Johnston's upward symbol and S & vS's downward symbol resemble an "L"." Right, so they do, sorry. Johnston's inverted numbers are 'upside down' mirrors that you get when you turn your music paper upside down. It might be that some sort of computerized, electronic score ...

Re: 13-limit JI

"I'm afraid they did for me." [need confirming] Right, I meant that I'd already confirmed them (in this thread, Mon Nov 16, 2015 6:25 pm) "Sabat and von Schweinitz use exactly the same symbol to lower by a 7-comma, that Johnston uses to raise by a 7-comma" Not exactly, neither of...

Re: 13-limit JI

The direction of 7 and 19 didn't need confirming; I've used Johnston's notation both in sketching on paper and in Finale, with playback, for 15 years. It's interesting that the Kepler violist says they calculated all the cent values and used meters in the recording but I'm sure that they do tune by ...

Re: 13-limit JI

"Can you confirm this Juhani? (or anyone else) I'm not confident of those above 13. In particular, the requirement for a + sign in notating the 23rd harmonic seems strange." Yes, those are correct. I found 23 being an inflection of F#+ strange, too, when I learned it, as I'd assumed the id...

Re: 13-limit JI

Johnston accidentals exist for 80:81 24:25 35:36 32:33 64:65 50:51 95:96 45:46 144:145 30:31 and that's it. So there are 20 different Johnston accidentals (the above 10 up and down). Theoretically the system could exceed up to even higher primes but Johnston has never used them in his music so the s...
